New appointment at MADE Cymru adds to research expertise

MADE Cymru has recently recruited Sam Minshell who joins the team as a Research

Officer. Sam will be providing both research and technical expertise in the areas of advanced and addictive manufacturing in the scoping out and delivery of the company/collaborative projects on the Advanced Design Engineering (ADE) initiative.

The impact of his work on the project will contribute to the:

·         Development of new products and/or processes

·         Optimisation of existing products/processes

·         Access to and knowledge of new technologies and materials

Sam commenced his career in construction as a Civil Engineer before making the move to study an MSc in Mechanical Engineering. He studied his doctorate at Swansea University culminating in a thesis titled ‘Towards state of the art vacuum locks for a novel continuous PVD galvanising process results’. As part of the EngD, he had a placement at Tata Steel Europe. Sam uses his extensive knowledge to find innovative approaches to solve engineering problems. He has recently become the lead inventor on two pending patents from his research work.

MADE Cymru is a suite of EU funded projects delivered by University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) to help Welsh SMEs and individuals to plug into the power of disruptive technologies, in order to boost productivity.

Sam says, “I’m really looking forward to joining the talented and energetic MADE Cymru team, working on a broad range of exciting technical topics, supporting the Welsh manufacturing industry.”

Lisa Lucas, Senior Research Associate at MADE Cymru says, “Sam will be a real asset to the project. The expertise and experience he brings to the team will further enable us to tackle the challenges faced by Welsh manufacturers and work with them to find solutions.”

When he is not busy solving engineering problems, Sam also loves live music, playing the guitar, 5-a-side football, cycling and karate.
