Inspiring Innovation to Address Industry Challenges

Innovation begins with an idea. Some are big, some are small. However, all ideas need a bit of assistance when it comes to helping innovative ideas become reality. This is where Airbus Endeavr, funded by Airbus and Welsh Government, comes in.

The not-for-profit company exists to commission early stage research to take ideas through to proof-of-concept or to the point where commercial value can be realised.

Domains of particular interest:

  • Secure connectivity including Cyber Security
  • Autonomy, Flight Physics and Advanced Concepts
  • Industrial Systems, Manufacturing, Assembly and Testing
  • Electrification, Power and Energy Management
  • Structural Engineering, Materials and Processes
  • Artificial Intelligence and Computing
  • Digital Services and Innovative Platform Support

The aim is to help address the many challenges faced by industry. Currently, these challenges range from sustainable and advanced materials through to systems, connectivity, artificial intelligence, autonomy and electrification.

Each research project is undertaken by innovative small businesses, universities or institutes who have relevant knowledge and expertise. Frequently, the projects are undertaken by a mix of partners with complementary skills and capabilities and a passion for working collaboratively to achieve tangible results.

The impact of the research commissioned has led to many opportunities in the areas of regional strength. Project successes include:

Digital Services – Passenger experience data, hyperspectral data optical payload, mesh-as-a-service and lightning strike for composite materials.

Secure Connectivity – Cyber industrial tools, fibre optic testing and applications, free space optical communications for defence, secure highspeed data communications, image processing or high data applications with low size, weight and power (such as 5G antennae).

Artificial intelligence (AI) for Productivity – AI and informatics for industrial digitalisation and associated applications.

Positive outcomes include collaborative working, support of start-ups and spin-outs, business relocation and growth, maintenance and creation of high-value, high-skilled jobs, development of innovative products and services and the attraction of significant inward investment to help underpin and accelerate the Welsh economy.
